The Hope of Education

As I sit here in Northern Ireland with a group of students exploring theater, history, culture and ideas, I am struck by the fact that these students have taken a giant leap of faith to leave their homes and travel to lands unknown in order to learn. And, I leap with them with great joy. And, in fact, I am inspired by their hope in what this month will bring.

In the two days we’ve been here, we have begun creating and analyzing, imagining and criticizing. We are lighting up many different parts of our brains and teaching our brains how to make improbable connections. In edu-speak, we call that critical thinking, and we place it at the top of the hierarchy. This is the value of a liberal arts education. This is why I teach.
